In bed, bedding damps the motion. A second path watches the heart rate instead, and needs a watch. Keep your emergency plan.

What each device can and cannot do overnight.
Overnight cover is the reason to install this. So, exactly:
| Device | While you are using it | Screen off, app closed | Heart rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android phone | Yes | Yes | No |
| iPhone | Yes | No | No |
| Apple Watch | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Wear OS watch | Yes | Yes | Yes |
-
An iPhone alone cannot watch you sleep. iOS lets no app sample motion with the screen off. On Apple hardware the Watch is the only overnight cover, and the app says so.
-
The watch is also the only pulse. The nocturnal path needs a heart rate rising out of rest. Both signals must agree for twenty-five seconds.
